Joe Toscano

I am a PhD student in the Cognition and Perception program in the Department of Psychology at the University of Iowa. I'm a native of Rochester, NY and received my bachelor's degree in Brain & Cognitive Sciences from the University of Rochester. At Iowa, I work in the MACLab with Prof. Bob McMurray.

My research focuses on speech perception and word recognition and how these processes unfold over time in-the-moment and over development.

•   How does the speech signal map onto units like words?
•   How are speech sounds learned?
•   When do we see sensitivity to fine-grained acoustic differences?

Answering these questions involves several different approaches, from building computational models to empirical methods, including eye-tracking and event-related brain potential (ERP) techniques. The links on the left describe some of my current research projects.
