Teaching Assistant Positions

The Psychology Department sometimes has TA positions available each semester for graduate students from other departments. Most of these positions are full half-time positions (nominally 20 hours/week) for freshman- and sophomore-level courses (see list below). These positions typically involve attending two one-hour lectures each week, leading four one-hour discussion sections (30 students per section), holding office hours, proctoring exams, attending a weekly TA meeting, and grading papers and other written assignments.

We occasionally also have quarter-time TA positions available (nominally 10 hours/week) for junior- and senior-level courses. These positions typically involve attending three 60-minute or two 90-minute lectures each week, holding office hours, proctoring exams, and grading papers and other written assignments.

To apply, send a cover letter listing the classes for which you are qualified, a CV (including relevant coursework), and a list of 2-3 references to our Coordinator of Graduate Studies, Prof. Cathleen Moore. These materials can be sent in paper form to Cathleen Moore at E11 Seashore Hall, Iowa City, IA, 52242-1407, or in electronic form to cathleen-moore@uiowa.edu (questions may also be sent to this e-mail address). To receive full consideration, you should apply by June 15th for the Fall semester and by November 1st for the Spring semester. If it looks likely that we will need someone with your background, you will be contacted for an interview, typically 2-8 weeks before the beginning of the semester. Applicants will be evaluated on the basis of their knowledge of the subject matter for a particular course, their previous teaching-related experience, and their communication abilities. Appointments are generally for a single semester.
