Basic Research Interests

1. The developmental course of interpersonal processes in intimate relationships, including:

  • Physical aggression
  • Conflict management
  • Interspousal support
  • Trust and intimacy
  • Sexual behavior
  • Marital adjustment and stability

2. The development and dissemination of secondary prevention programs targeting physical aggression and its impact on individual and dyadic adjustment

3. Individual risk factors relevant to physical aggression specifically and marital dysfunction in general, including:

  • Family of origin dysfunction
  • Attachment patterns
  • Maladaptive coping skills in times of stress
  • Symptoms of depression and anxiety

4. The bidirectional influence of marital relationships and children on each other

5. The design and implementation of new data-gathering methods and analytic techniques to improve our ability to examine the developmental course of individual and dyadic phenomena
