Our research goals

Research in our lab explores human communication and cognition, with a particular focus on how children and adults express and incorporate information using both speech and gesture.

When people talk, they gesture, changing the location and shape of their hands in precise coordination with what they say. We are exploring how and why people gesture when they speak.

Our work has demonstrated that gesturing can: 1.) facilitate information processing in the moment of speaking, and 2.) lead to changes in representation over time. In our ongoing work, we are exploring how the mind, the body and the environment interact in support of communication and learning.

For example:

Why do children learn more when they gesture?

What do gestures reveal about a person's thoughts?

about children's developing understanding of the world?

How does gesture affect listeners?

The overarching thread uniting all of this work is how people express their thoughts in their hand movements in conjunction with speech, how others extract this information, and the implications for ongoing cognition and learning over time.  To this end, we do studies with both children and adults, integrating across cognitive and developmental perspectives.
