Welcome. Have you ever wondered why people move their hands when they talk? Most people believe that hand gestures help speakers and listeners communicate. But we move our hands even when we're talking on the phone (you can readily observe this phenomenon in cell phone users). This suggests that hand gesture may be functional for speakers, in addition to any effects that gesture might have on listeners. Our research suggests that hand gesture can have a variety of effects on speakers and listeners, not only facilitating their communication, but also influencing learning and memory.
